Frankly, you can't escape the ocean because beaches and cliffs surround La Jolla on three sides.
It's an educational community where you'll find the University of California, San Diego, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Scripps Research Institute, and the Salk Institute. So it's no surprise that almost everyone who lives here has a higher education degree or at least some college experience. You're in the wrong place if you don't like the beach. La Jolla Shores Beach is a great place for swimming, and Scripps Pier, as I would say, was created specifically for photographers.
Some people enjoy picnics in the park. La Jolla Underwater Park is a protected area where you can dive and kayak as you please (be careful not to end up being a picnic for big fish). Miramar Ranch North has a reputation for being a great place to raise a family. There's plenty for kids to do and easy access to shopping.
It's also one of the safest communities in San Diego County. It is part of the Scripps Ranch community and is known for its hiking trails. Public schools that educate children in Solana Beach are among the best in California. If you like art galleries, you'll love the plethora of art venues on Solana Beach, in addition to the boutiques, antique stores, and import establishments.

I haven't been to California for a long time (11 years) but I remember San Diego well.
